news
With the Democratic Convention coming up, Senator Barack Obama is expected to announce his pick for Vice President running-mate this week.
Tim Kaine, Joseph Biden and Evan Bayh are topping the lists as potential VP nominees for Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama.

With a party that's still feeling the pains of the primary season divide, Obama's choice of Vice Presidential running mate will do little to heal those wounds (unless of course he picks Senator Hillary Clinton, which is considered a long shot). However, by making a strong stand with a strong second-in-command to go to war with the Republicans, Obama can quiet doubts many, even in the Democratic party, have had over his decision making abilities.

The Choices

US Senator Evan Bayh has been in the Senate since 1999 and is mostly known for his centrist views. While he is a committed Democrat, Bayh has often had more right-leaning ideas on taxes, the War in Iraq and the Patriot Act. He was also a leading voice in asking for the resignation of former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld when the Iraq War appeared at its bleakest.

Bayh put out an autobiography titled From Father to Son: A Private Life in the Public Eye where he discussed being the son of Senator Birch Bayh and the importance of father-son relationships.

Bahy is pro-choice leaning, abstains on same-sex marriage, and supports eminent domain laws.

<img src="http://www.virginia.gov/governorkaine/images/TimKaine300x355.jpg" / >Governor Tim Kaine has held office in Virginia since 2005 and previously practiced law for seventeen years. Like John Edwards, Kaine has fought in the past for the rights of the working class and minorities, famously in cases involving equal housing opportunities.

During his term as governor, Kaine has banned smoking in government buildings, made great efforts to protect large portions of Virginia from private development, and taken steps to modernize the records of the post-Civil War era in Virginia, a step that may help in research of African American history.

Kaine is considered a blue dog Democrat in that he has personal convictions that are conservative but governs liberally. He personally opposes abortion and same-sex marriage but has not actively sought to diminish either in his state.

Senator Joe Biden is perhaps the most experienced of the choices for Obama, and more widely known in political circles. He ran during the primaries against Obama and Clinton, and made a strong showing in several states. He is currently serving his sixth term in office as a U.S. Senator.

Where Biden shows strongest is his knowledge of foreign affairs, and in such, his staunch opposition to the Bush Administration in their conduct during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars post 9/11. He would provide a balance for Obama to offset the immense advantage Senator John McCain has over him in experience.

Biden has served on the Judiciary Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee. He was one of the original politicians to call for a splitting of Iraq into three sections to offset the violence in the country. Mostly liberal in his voting record, Biden would compliment Obama's style perhaps more than any of the other choices, but his age may undercut the out with old Washington, in with Change promotion that Obama has run on since last year.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/00658/news-graphics-2008-_658631a.jpg KC Hunter The Game August 19, 2008, 5:12 pm www.webchannel24.com 260
Big Mouth Pole Vault
sports
After a lot of trash talking, Russian Pole Vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva puts her American rival Jenn Stuczynski in her place.
Russian Pole Vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva got more than a gold medal in Beijing, she got some bragging rights.

Before the Games, American Pole Vaulter Jenn Stuczynski offered up some not-so-humble words to her Russian rival.

"I hope we do some damage," she had said, "and, you know, kick some Russian butt."

Obviously, Isinbayeva not only understands English, but is apparently "not deaf" according to her response.

Despite the bad mouthing, it came down to the actual event where Isinbayeva quickly beat her own personal best, broke new records and won the gold medal. While Stuczynski watched on, Isinbayeva ran around teh stadium with a Russian flag held high over her head - a bit of rubbing Stuczynski's nose in it.

Apparently, these two will be going at it for the next few years as Stuczynski, who won the silver, doesn't seem to be giving up on her ambition to beat the Russian champion.

“It’s just experience. She’s been in the Olympics before, she’s been in world championships, she’s jumped a decade longer than me, so it’s just a matter of time,” she said.

Isinbayeva responded by stating that Stuczynski needed to "know her position". The former gymnast-turned-Russian-pole-vaulter did just that by winning in Beijing.
http://www.globalgateway.org.uk/images/sports_300x374_yelena%20isinbayeva,%20russia.jpg Derrick Moore Shooting The Gap August 19, 2008, 8:28 am www.webchannel24.com 259
Swedish Temper Tantrum at Olympics
sports
Ara Abrahamian, a Swedish Olympic wrestler, threw down his bronze medal in protest in Beijing.
The Swedish Olympic wrestling coach, Leo Myllari, deemed the decision against his protege, Ara Abrahamian, as politics. Abrahamian agreed as he threw down his bronze medal in a fit during Thursday's ceremony.

Abrahamian took off his medal and dropped it in the middle of the mat during the medal ceremony, claiming "I don't care about this medal. I wanted gold". He later stated that he was quitting wrestling after his performance.

For the record, Andrea Minguzzi of Italy won the gold which angered Abrahamian greatly, requiring several of his teammates to hold him back from harming any of the judges. Swedish fans in attendance booed the judges as they left the arena, showing that the sportsmanship of the Swedish match those of their athletes.

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/sports/photos/2008/08/14/abrahamian-medal-080814-392.jpg Derrick Moore Shooting The Gap August 15, 2008, 8:16 pm www.webchannel24.com 258
Little Hope For Hillary Supporters
news
Hillary Clinton will speaks at the DNC Convention, but don't expect her to be named VP or nominated.
At this year's Democratic National Convention, former Democratic candidate Senator Hillary Clinton will play a role in the proceedings but not a huge one.

Clinton will speak at the convention but not as a keynote speaker. The gesture by the Obama campaign is made as a way of healing some lingering party wounds amongst Democrats, especially those who still support - and in some respect hold out hope for a nomination for - Hillary Clinton.

The honor of keynote speaker will go to Mark Warner of Virginia, who will speak the same day as Senator Clinton. Former President Bill Clinton will also have a slot at the convention, but again, the focus will be on Obama and his chosen VP candidate.

Then there is the issue of Clinton's delegates which will be counted at the convention. Although this will bring up concerns again over the number of votes that Clinton received during the primaries versus Obama, it has been indicated that Senator Clinton will give her delegates over to Senator Obama and thus solidifying him as the candidate elect for the Democratic party.

"I am convinced that honoring Sen. Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion," said Obama.

By extending the olive branch to Bill and Hillary Clinton, Obama hopes to patch up any ongoing divides within the party as they look to head full-swing into the fall in the battle with Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain. After the convention, we will have a clearer picture at where the Democratic party stands in relation to unity.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/00653/news-graphics-2007-_653956a.jpg KC Hunter The Game August 14, 2008, 11:05 pm www.webchannel24.com 257
Phelps Runs the Table for Gold
sports
Michael Phelps secures his place in history by being the most decorated champion in Olympic history.
from Times Online

One epic journey is over. Michael Phelps of the United States is the most successful Olympic athlete ever. With four golds here at the Water Cube so far, after a world record of 1min 52.03secs in the 200 metres butterfly, Superfish now has a career ten gold medals to his name, one more than Paavo Nurmi, the Finnish athlete, Soviet woman gymnast Larysa Latynina, and the iconic Americans Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis. Time to rocket off into orbit on his epic journey number two. The 4 x 200 metres freestyle later today is set to bring an 11th gold medal, which would leave Phelps two targets shy of equalling Spitz's record of seven titles at one Games.
http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/040815/040815_phelps_nogold_vlrg_2p.widec.jpg Derrick Moore Shooting The Gap August 12, 2008, 10:34 pm www.webchannel24.com 255
Editorial: Republicans Stand Up For Citizens on Oil
news
The so-called Gang of Ten look to undo the only positive steps Republicans have taken towards energy this year.
It's almost as if the Republicans are becoming Democrats in election year strategy. While House Republicans take a stand and more-or-less boycott Congress' vacation and House Leader Nancy Pelosi's blocking and refusal to vote on a new energy bill, Senate Republicans have teamed up with some Senate Democrats to propose a less-intensive compromise.

Um, hello, that was your one big card for this year's election. What the two dozen House Republicans did was take a stand against the bloated members of Congress going on an extended vacation while the country suffers under high gas prices (which even at $3.81 per gallon is still over what it should be).

Instead of uniting, senators Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Corker and Johnny Isakson decided to join with some Democrats and thrust a plan that will break the gridlock on the energy debate.

Essentially what they're doing is a) proposing something that eliminates any effective drilling for oil within U.S. borders for a small amount of ineffective drilling and b) throw water on the growing fire that was finally getting the GOP some support amongst the public.

Thank you again for showing us just why conservatives are not voting for Republicans.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/2743948427_d11459180b_o.jpg Thomas Joyce Cobra Nation August 12, 2008, 6:29 pm www.webchannel24.com 254
Comedian and Actor Bernie Mac Dies at 50
entertainment
Bernie Mac dies at age 50 of pneumonia complications.
Bernie Mac, known for his old school mixed with new school tough man comedy, died Saturday morning of complications from pneumonia.

The comedian had suffered from sarcoidosis before, but the condition was said to be in remission. The pneumonia at this time had no relation to his prior condition.

Mac was on the radar as one of the best comedians around for most of the 80s and 90s, doing stand up and having roles in a few movies and television shows including House Party 3 and Spike Lee's Get On The Bus. He later broke out as a feature star when The Original Kings of Comedy, which featured him, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey, introduced Mac to the mainstream stage.

This was followed by later success including roles in the Oceans movies with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Charlie's Angels as Bosley, and his own highly acclaimed television show The Bernie Mac Show which ran for 100+ episodes and was won a Peabody award in 2002.

Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago growing up on the South Side. He lived with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.

Mac stated he planned to retire in 2007 in an interview with David Letterman. "I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit. I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."

Bernie Mac was married to wife Rhonda McCullough with one daughter, Je’Niece, who was earning a Masters degree in mental health counseling.
http://www.gii.in/hollywood/images/B/Bernie-Mac-1.jpg KC Hunter The Game August 9, 2008, 11:39 am www.webchannel24.com 252
Editorial: John Edwards and His Baby's Momma
news
After denying it for weeks, John Edwards finally admits to his affair ... and I couldn't be more disgusted.
Okay, if you're wife has cancer ... cancer ... what do you do?

a) stay by her side and do a lot of praying

b) run for President

c) have an affair

Well, most of you (hopefully) would choose a. Unfortunately, John Edwards chose b and c. Choosing B doesn't upset me as much as choosing a (although his speeches were at times hard to digest). What the heck is wrong with this guy?

Rielle Hunter, the woman in question, apparently has been around the block a few times too as one of Edward's aids, Andrew Young, has claimed her child (whose birth certificate doesn't name a father) as his. What were they doing, passing her around the office?

While everyone is worried about what role Edwards could play, if any, during the Democratic National Convention in fall, I'm wondering about his wife. This kind of media attention, in addition to the stress of dealing with an extramarital affair, cannot be good for Elizabeth Edwards.

I hope the media doesn't make a circus out of this (we know they will). John Edwards ... in all honesty ... you're pathetic.
http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/edwards.jpg Thomas Joyce Cobra Nation August 8, 2008, 7:09 pm www.webchannel24.com 245
In With Favre, Out With Pennington
sports
After weeks of bad feelings, controversy and rumors, a deal was finally made as future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets.
With all the bad mouthing and tense feelings surrounding the Brett Favre fiasco, one would think the end of it would bring relief. Well, it did for everyone except Chad Pennington.

Favre was traded to the New York Jets and apparently is anxious to start the new season with a new team. The Minneapolis Vikings apparently put in an offer but Green Bay would prefer not to have Favre in two "coming home" games this year with him joining a team in the same division.

“The last 24 hours have been crazy,” said Favre who merely hours before the first Jets pre-season game was announced as their new quarterback.

For Pennington, he was released after seasons of shaky play and injuries. His future remains in question.
http://beat.bodoglife.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/chad-pennington.jpg Derrick Moore Shooting The Gap August 7, 2008, 6:05 pm www.webchannel24.com 244
US Women's Soccer Team Upset By Norway
sports
In what some have described as a nightmare, the United States Women's Olympic Soccer Team lost to Norway as the Olympic games kick off.
The U.S. women's soccer team lost 2-0 to Norway in the Olympic's opener Wednesday. The team gave up two goals in the first four minutes, cementing their defeat early on.

Abby Wambach, the team's star player who is out with a leg injury, was not on the field Wednesday to help usher on a victory for the United States. Outside of a few excellent plays by Christie Rampone and Amy Rodriguez, the US Women's Team looked weak against a Norway team who played their best soccer in years.

Larsen Kaurin, Melissa Wiik and captain Solveig Gulbrandsen, showed up to play hard for Norway and insist that this isn't a fluke. Time will tell whether or not this is the beginning of the Games' first Cinderella Story.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/mediaUS/20080225/rampone_200.jpg Brian Green Shooting The Gap August 6, 2008, 9:45 pm www.webchannel24.com 243
