Bernie Mac dies at age 50 of pneumonia complications.
Bernie Mac, known for his old school mixed with new school tough man comedy, died Saturday morning of complications from pneumonia.

The comedian had suffered from sarcoidosis before, but the condition was said to be in remission. The pneumonia at this time had no relation to his prior condition.

Mac was on the radar as one of the best comedians around for most of the 80s and 90s, doing stand up and having roles in a few movies and television shows including House Party 3 and Spike Lee's Get On The Bus. He later broke out as a feature star when The Original Kings of Comedy, which featured him, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey, introduced Mac to the mainstream stage.

This was followed by later success including roles in the Oceans movies with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Charlie's Angels as Bosley, and his own highly acclaimed television show The Bernie Mac Show which ran for 100+ episodes and was won a Peabody award in 2002.

Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago growing up on the South Side. He lived with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.

Mac stated he planned to retire in 2007 in an interview with David Letterman. "I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit. I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."

Bernie Mac was married to wife Rhonda McCullough with one daughter, Je’Niece, who was earning a Masters degree in mental health counseling.
http://www.gii.in/hollywood/images/B/Bernie-Mac-1.jpg KC Hunter The Game August 9, 2008, 11:39 am www.webchannel24.com 252 Bernie Mac, KC Hunter, The Game, dies, death, actor, comedian, black comedian, pneumonia Comedian and Actor Bernie Mac Dies at 50

In his latest single, "Obama Is Here", Ludacris goes a bit too far even for his favorite politician.
"The world is ready for change because Obama is here," rings out as the chorus of Ludacris' new track, "Obama Is Here". During this cut, we hear him insult Jesse Jackson for "dissing" his boy, he says John McCain should be paralyzed (isn't that nice to say about a guy who was tortured for five years in defense of his country), Hillary Clinton is compared to female dogs and George W. Review: The Dark Knight Does Monster Business
Entertainment
The most anticipated film of 2008's summer season does not disappoint, from the late Heath Ledger's rousing portrayal of The Joker to the $190 million worth of special effects, this film had it all.
I am in the minority of movie goer's that did not think Batman Begins was a fantastic film. I thought it was simply good, dragging in spots, and not overwhelmingly epic or heroic in scope. The Dark Knight smashes that perception as this new iteration of the Batman franchise explodes off the screen as probably the best live action adaptation of the Batman mythos since the 1990 Michael Keaton / Jack Nicholson affair.

One of the first things you notice, a keep-over from the last film, is the realistic nature of the film. There are no tongue-in-cheek moments, there's no winking to the camera, and Gotham City is not a cartoon version of New York. It is, in all sense, every bit as modern and urban as Chicago or Detroit.

And now to Heath Ledger. Yes, the hype is worth it, and ask anyone who has seen the pencil scene how engrossing and disturbing his portrayal of The Joker is. With a cast so deep, including Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kane and Gary Oldman, it is Leger who pretty much owns this film.

The rest of the cast is superb in their own right. Oldman is fantastic as the last good cop in town while Bale finds himself settling a bit more into the torn Bruce Wayne than he did in the previous film. This is a more mature character who lacks the Luke Skywalker'ish annoyances from Begins. Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes and holds her own and Kane and Freeman do their parts with grace that you'd expect from seasoned actors.

It's not perfect ... again, I thought the movie dragged a bit (it is over two hours long ... way too long for an action film ... this isn't Lord of the Rings), but that aside, The Dark Knight has clinched the top spot as the best film this summer season.

5 out of 5
http://www.wallpaperez.net/wallpaper/movie/m/The-Dark-Knight-Batman-1230.jpg Jason Starr Entertainment July 21, 2008, 1:22 pm www.webchannel24.com 226 Batman, Joker, Heath Ledger, blockbuster, summer movies, The Dark Knight, box office, highest grossing The brooding sequel to Batman Begins sets a new record for opening weekend earnings, ousting Spiderman 3 from the top spot
Review: Hellboy 2
Entertainment
Hellboy 2 does not disappoint as another one of summer's blockbusters delivers.
Decidedly different from the first, the Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labrynth) directed Hellboy 2: The Golden Army starts off with a trip back in time to a young Hellboy being told the story of the Golden Army. It's a tried and true but excellently pulled off introduction to this story, giving this sequel more of an epic flavor than the first.

Ron Pearlman returns as Hellboy with Abe and Liz, the only survivors from the first movie (the comic relief love interest for Liz was apparently re-assigned to another government agency because of Hellboy). They deal with the pressures of becoming media stars when an investigation goes wrong. They soon discover that mankind is not all that willing to accept their uniqueness. Think the X-Men concept of discrimination, just not so beat over your head.

Meanwhile, the forces of oddness are being charged into a war with mankind by an ambitious prince who wishes to squash the truce with humans and raise the Golden Army. In order to do this, he must confront his father and reclaim all three pieces of the crown that will allow it's wearer control of the long lost army.

Throughout the film, you notice Del Toro's style everywhere. The sheer detail of the creatures and environments ... as well as the personalities they carry ... really transport the audience into this world unlike many films of its kind. In a particular scene where Hellboy, Abe and new character Krauss (voice by Seth Macfarlane) are wandering through the "troll market", one cannot help but be reminded of the wonder and splendor of the original cantina scene in Star Wars: A New Hope. This scene however, with the imaginative characters and utter depth each of these "extras" carries, really goes above and beyond any rehash of the cantina scene done before it.

You may find yourself wanting to see more of what the creature designers behind this film have come up with as the movie goes along. Truly inventive.

The storyline is much better this time too, with consequences, personal issues, a wonderful duet by Hellboy and Abe about love, and a few surprises along the way. Certainly worth the money to see it and, if you're a fan of high action, tongue-in-cheek, imaginative fiction, this is certainly for you.

4 out of 5 stars
http://electricityandlust.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/hellboy-2.jpg Jason Starr Entertainment July 17, 2008, 8:10 am www.webchannel24.com 222 Hellboy 2, summer movies, sequels, Ron Pearlman, Hellboy 2 Burns Into Theatres
Editorial: The 20th MTV Real World Season Finale ... Ugh
Entertainment
In the twentieth edition of MTV's The Real World, viewers like myself are left wondering what in the world is the country coming to?
When I was younger, I was a huge fan of MTV's The Real World. You got to see young adults advancing in careers, having fun, dealing with the issues young adults face going from college to adulthood.

Over the past few years, that hasn't been the case.

It appears that in the search for higher ratings MTV has sought out the most narcissistic, self-involved and chemically dependent people they could find to put on this show in order to spark outrageous moments, thus to spark ratings. This season, the cast was set in Hollywood where seven (actually nine) young "adults" live together, work on at an improv comedy shop, get chances to be singers, musicians, tv hosts, models; all the while being filmed for the whole country to watch.

From the word go (ie. the pre-season profiles of each of the cast members), I could tell this was going to be a sad trip. All but one of the cast members - Will - showed a profound sense of narcissistic and amoral attitudes. Once they were at the house, it didn't take long for them to go out, get drunk and have sex with people they knew for less than a day.

Over the course of the season, we find out that Joey - who exhibited the scariest anger management issues I've ever seen on reality television - is a recovering substance abuser. He tells this to one of his roommates who in response encourages him to drink. What?! The same roommate spends the whole season attempting to, and succeeding at times, sleeping with random women, including one of his roommates. Sarah is the only one with any sense of self respect in the whole house but that is quickly squashed by her never-ending nagging and snarky observations of her roommates (note: not the way to get people to stop doing self destructive things by wagging your finger at them).

Most of the season seems to revolve around Brianna, or Bri, who is a charming girl with a talented voice. Unfortunately, she has the morals of a stripper because, well, she's a stripper and instead of proving wrong the stereotypes that many (including her female roommates) have about women in that profession, she actually amplifies it by getting into legal trouble, being admittedly lazy, and acting "ghetto" when involved in any kind of conflict.

When Joey's issues with substance abuse get out of hand, he is sent to rehab by MTV (good move) but later returns to the show (bad move) and the house. Although his roommates profess love and support, within twelve hours of his return from rehab, they leave him to go out drinking with only ONE of the roommates (Sarah) returning to support him. They later continue to drink in the house and go out every night to the point that Joey, much to his credit, decides to go home because the environment is not a healthy one for him.

This is not to mention to worst of the bunch, Greg, who was voted on the show in an online contest by MTV.com. Calling himself the Chosen One, looking down on his other roommates, ditching his job on the show, and playing mean-spirited pranks on his roommates soon earns him their disdain and eventually earns him the distinction of being booted off the show.

The only saving grace of this show (even though I'm sure it escapes most of this show's demographic) is that after all these issues and happenings, you see each one of these cast members have karma come back on them. Dave, who runs his mouth about how bad he is and is a womanizer, winds up getting beat up outside a club for hitting on someone's girlfriend. Will, who is somewhat of a manipulator, nearly winds up losing his girlfriend (and still may when she sees the show on television). Sarah wags her finger day in and day out and winds up puking from getting way too drunk herself. And on and on.

Gone are the days when Puck was seen as too wild.

It's also interesting to see how all the cast members justify their behavior, and even though Sarah is preachy, she isn't wrong in her observations of her roommates. They are self destructive, narcissistic, counter productive, manipulative and just plainly not the kind of people you would trust. The excesses, the blatant lack of caring for a recovering roommate, the sheer selfishness of this entire cast disturbs me, and makes me wonder whether or not this is really MTV choosing these kinds of people for ratings, or whether this is a telling sign of where today's youth culture really is.

I fear it's the latter.
http://www.mtv.com/onair/realworld/season20/images/flipbooks/cast/groups/rw_30-seven-original.jpg Jason Starr Entertainment July 11, 2008, 3:04 pm www.webchannel24.com 221 MTV, Real World, Joey, reality television, music television, Hollywood The 20th season of MTV's Real World leaves one weeping for the future
Review: Hancock Surprises Critics and Pleases Audiences
Entertainment
Will Smith has been known for his summer blockbuster hits, and he scores another one with the release of Hancock.
Movies like Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and even the ill-received Wild Wild West all have movie superstar Will Smith in common. Fourth of July weekend in 2008 is no exception, with another wonderful run for Smith as the drunken, foul-mouthed anti-superhero Hancock.

The film is about a superhero who takes a lack-luster approach to fighting crime. Imagine 50 Cent with super powers and you basically get the character Hancock. Time after time, Hancock tries to stop the bad guys but winds up doing more damage to an overly-critical public who is none too pleased with his antics. For his part, Hancock could care less about what the public thinks about him, even talking down and abusing little kids ... except for when a certain expletive is used, in which he loses his temper and his target usually suffer in the end.

Throw in to the mix the long-lost television star Jason Bateman who plays a none-too-successful marketing agent who's trying to "save the world" with a doe-eyed ad campaign he's trying to push to big business. Hancock winds up saving his life and in return, Bateman's character agrees to improve the super hero's drastically tarnished image.

What follows is standard fare until half way through the film when it turns on its ear and offers up a rather pleasing surprise, some heart touching moments, and a plausible (or should I say, tolerable) backstory that fits into the universe.

Hancock manages to pull us into this world and make us care for and believe the characters, something that many blockbusters this year have failed to do. Will Smith and Jason Bateman have great comedic chemistry while Smith and leading lady Charlize Theron add another level completely to the film.

Highly recommended for a good summer movie with a tad more in the substance realm.
http://www.latinoreview.com/images/user/hancock.jpg KC Hunter The Game July 9, 2008, 10:30 pm www.webchannel24.com 218 Hancock, movies, summer blockbusters, Will Smith Will Smith stars in yet another in a long line of 4th of July blockbuster hits
Another McMahon Moment
Entertainment
The 2008 WWE Draft had some surprises, and some tasteless acts as well ... but hey, it's WWE!
On June 23rd 2008, World Wrestling Entertainment held another of it's yearly draft nights on Monday Night Raw. Since the brand extension of the WWE into (now) three different groups/shows: Raw, Smackdown and ECW, the WWE Draft has become one of the highest rated Raw shows each year.

Add on to this Vince McMahon's "McMahon's Million Dollar Mania", in which McMahon gave away three million dollars over a three week period to several Raw fans, you had a large audience that the WWE needs and is trying to keep.

With this swelled audience, we needed a grand finale to keep a large portion of this new audience to come back next week. And, McMahon may have gotten it.

In addition to various surprise draft picks, amongst them being Rey Mysterio going to Raw and the Hardy boys BOTH being downgraded (with Matt "slipping" all the way to ECW), there was a lot of under-the-breath comments made and actions seen. The biggest shock came when long time announcer of Raw, Jim Ross was traded with Michael Cole, thus putting Cole in Ross' seat on Monday nights and putting Ross on Smackdown which is a lower tier show than Raw. It also breaks up the now eleven year team of Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler which has been touted as one of ... if not THE ... best wrestling commentary teams in history.

We also later found out that Mr. Kennedy has been bumped to Smackdown as well as Triple H. Triple H on the second tier show? Now, they've drafted him to Smackdown before only for that not to stick. We'll see if it sticks this time.

In addition, Shawn Michaels had another "injury" to his eye ... Melina apparently had a real injury when she was tossed out of the ring and landed on her ankle wrong.

The most notable thing for me was the commentators who three of whom were rather upset most of the night. JR was ticked he was drafted to Raw, Cole was excited yet humble and uncomfortable being on Raw, and Tazz was clearly ticked at the lack of respect ECW got the whole night. All the commentators took shots at Mike Adamle who is notorious for making flubs. At first, I thought it was part of an angle, then it just became apparent that Adamle was sincerely disliked by all the other commentators. With ECW getting ONE draft pick, US Champion Matt Hardy, and subsequently losing their top star CM Punk and their champion Kane, one has to wonder if the future of ECW is going down the tubes. Tazz clearly thought so as he passively quit commentating when all the ECW guys were thrown out of the battle royal ... this is after a night of him making comments here and there at how the draft clearly was diminishing ECW further than it already was.

Of course, the big note is the McMahon angle with the stage apparently falling on him. Now, looking at the show, you can see he clearly was not hit by any of that staging, but it was a good "sell" by him, the staff and the wrestlers who all broke character to help Vince. McMahon even called his real life son-in-law, Triple H, by his birth name Paul, claiming that he couldn't feel his legs.

A year ago, we had a similar angle with the whole McMahon-car-bomb incident ... which was canceled by the real life double murder-suicide by Chris Benoit. Can you say karma? So why the hell would you do it AGAIN? Well, a TNA wrestling tech was already crushed by stage equipment so I guess it's okay??? Even though the story is interesting, it has nothing to do with lifting new stars on the show core of the show which is what happens in the ring. It's also in bad taste.

For McMahon's sake, he better hope karma doesn't come around again this year like it did last year. I don't think I can take anymore wrestling tragedies.
http://getsbybuckner.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/vince-mcmahon.jpg Garth Brantley Sports N Stuff June 24, 2008, 8:21 pm www.webchannel24.com 204 Vince McMahon, WWE, stage collapse, injury, wrestling, sports entertainment, Monday Night Raw, The Draft, Millions Vince McMahon apparently has undergone another "attack" ... will he ever learn?

Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

After Rocky Balboa and Live Free Or Die Hard, we all were left wondering if the string of good "old guys are new again" movies could continue when another 80s icon, Indiana Jones, returned to the screen. Luckily, and skillfully, the trend continues.
After Rocky Balboa and Live Free Or Die Hard, we all were left wondering if the string of good "old guys are new again" movies could continue when another 80s icon, Indiana Jones, returned to the screen. Luckily, and skillfully, the trend continues.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a trip back to the magical era of 1980s popcorn cinema where heroes were good guys with a slight edge (not bad guys who weren't as bad as their enemies), adventure, clean fun and a sense of wonder. We find Henry Jones, Jr. going now by Henry instead of Indiana, kidnapped by Russians (the 1959 setting leaves out the old tried-and-true enemy of Nazi Germany). He is taken to a desert military base by this group led by a very alluring Kate Blanchett. Now, anyone whose paid attention over the last twenty years will automatically suspect Roswell, and after a few clever hints and tips, we discover that's exactly where they are and they're looking for ... you guessed it ... the alien body left after the Roswell crash. Indiana apparently was part of the initial recovery team but had no idea what it was they had actually recovered.

This leads to a traditional double-cross by Indy's partner, which then leads to a very entertaining chase throughout the military complex (which ironically has a cameo from another artifact that Indiana Jones found in a prior movie). After escaping, we find out what the plot is and that Marcus Broady and Henry Jones, Sr. (played in the previous film by the immortal Sean Connery) have passed away and the world is moving on from Dr. Jones. After some oh-so-obvious digs at post WWII America, Indy finds that he's no longer a hero to his country and begins to leave after being fired as a teacher. A young man named "Mutt" seeks his aid in finding his father and we're off to a map with an airplane overlay and red lines drawn to dots. Ah, nostalgia.

The rest of the movie is standard Indiana Jones fare benefiting greatly by the special effects advantages of the last twenty years since the last Indiana Jones film. Great performances by the entire cast, costume and set design which does put you back in the 50s, and a pretty decent script makes this a fun film.

Although the plot revelations are very obvious from the moment certain characters walk onto the screen, or names are mentioned, or head shapes are shown, this movie doesn't suffer from that because of the great storytelling. We wait to see the reactions, to slide down the cliffs, to beat up the huge Russian guy, and to see what eerie fate awaits the bad guys at the end.

Congrats to Lucas and Spielberg for bringing another fun film to the masses. However, I am surprised that Jones got so old and that his father died since the Holy Grail they drank from in The Last Crusade was supposed to extend life, and whatever happened to Short Round, and ... well, it's a popcorn film, can't get hung up on that stuff.

5 out ot 5 stars

*****
http://www.theculturebeat.com/wp-content/photos/Real_Indiana_Jones.jpg Derrick Moore CinemaReview June 13, 2008, 10:47 am www.webchannel24.com 197 Indiana Jones, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, movies, summer, blockbusters, advent Some years later ... many years later ... Review: Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian
Entertainment
The second movie in the Narnia series kicks of the 2008 summer movie season.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was a very family-oriented affair. Talking beavers, malicious wolves, a Jesus-like Lion, and four rather bratty siblings gave the movie a sense of "this is for kids" more than a cousin to the legendary Lord of the Rings franchise. They are, afterall, children's books but they're children's books from an era of literature where that didn't mean "this is silly".

Needless to say, I wasn't that much a fan of the first film. It was just okay to me.

Prince Caspian, is a different affair all together. We're introduced not to little children, WWII bombings or talking animals, but to a royal family giving birth to a new child, and the heir apparent leaving his home because his Uncle wants his newborn son to be king. From the start, this film has a bit of a more mature edge to it (I won't say darker). We're taken then into the real world of the Pevensies who are going to school and suffering from Narnia withdrawl after a year. Yes, they're still whining and the youngest is still the most mature, but it's good seeing them again. The boys are fighting, the girls are rolling their eyes, but eventually (due to a horn call), they are drawn back into the magical kingdom of Narnia.

Quickly, they realize things have changed as they come across their ruined former homes (100s of years have passed since they were last in Narnia ... by Narnia time). Soon, they come to realize a race of humans, the Telmarines, have invaded Narnia and taken over. All the magic creatures and talking animals have gone into hiding, other animals have regressed into what we know in the real world as wild animals, and even the trees have stopped dancing. Most of all, Aslan is nowhere to be found, even though Lucy continues to claim sightings of him like someone who's seen Big Foot in the woods.

They eventually link up with Caspian, who is a Telmarine but quickly understands that the horrors of his forefathers, and teams with the Narnians to make things right. From here, there are a series of battles that are dotted with coming-of-age decisions that add a great deal of drama to the story, something missing in the previous chapter.

Having a whole story under the belt helped greatly with giving some depth to these characters. The Pevensies are experienced and you do get a sense that they're not just snotty kids, but former kings and queens when you see them in Narnia. The alpha-male tension between Prince Caspian and Peter Pevensie (High King Peter) is well done and not overdone. There are also genuine comic moments in this one that are not as hokey as the attempts at comedy in the previous film. Most of all, a greater sense of tension runs throughout the film in moments like the castle siege, the field battle, the attempted resurrection of a past enemy, and most of all in the one-on-one boxing-like sword fight near the end.

Simply put, I was very impressed with this second outing. It was not gruesome so the kids can still watch it, but it wasn't so kid-like that there is no dread for the characters. The young actors aren't that much better than they were in the first film, but they have improved either from age or direction. The special effects are amazing but really do take a back seat to the characters (including a sword wielding mouse and a smart-mouthed dwarf).

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

4 out of 5 Stars
http://www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/photos/prince_caspian-poster1.jpg Derrick Moore Entertainment May 30, 2008, 8:11 am www.webchannel24.com 172 Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian, movies, childrens films, entertainment, fantasy, epic, adventure The second movie in the Chronicles of Narnia series gets summer off to a great start
Review: Cloverfield
Entertainment
Cloverfield breaks records and creeps out audiences.
Cloverfield is a film that starts out with a mish-mashed government "secret file" intro and then delves into a tape of a man looking out over the New York skyline, then moving to whom we assume is his girlfriend who is still lying in bed. It then cuts to another couple as they prepare for a friend (Rob (Michael Stahl-David) ) gowing away party.

Rob is going to Japan as Vice President of a major company. The party introduces us to many characters, namely Hud - a over-enthused young man who has loose lips and gets a bit vouyeristic with his camera duties. When Rob and his long time friend Beth have a falling out, and the nature of their real relationship is uncovered, party gossip insues. In the midst of this, a large explosion occurs and Manhattan quickly turns into a terrifying war zone.

We follow Rob, Hud and their friends as they try to make their way to Beth's home in order to rescue her. Meanwhile, the military is trying to subdue and destroy a 50+ story monstrosity that is hell-bent on destroying New York.

The film adopts the best aspects of 1999's The Blair Witch Project by using the first-person video camera trick, mixed with an elusive monster and creepy dark set pieces. Where is succeeds is that the monster is real, and after various glimpses, you do come face to face with the creature. Most of the movie you spend going "what the hell is that?".

The special effects team really outdid themselves with drawing the fantastic into a reality based world that made the ever-cliched "Godzilla" genre actually interesting and at times frigthening. The actors, although over the top in some places, play the story well and act as great (albeit one-dimensional) characters.

Certainly one of the best surprises early in 2008.

4 out of 5 stars

****
http://www.eclipsemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/cloverfield_poster.jpg KC Hunter CinemaReview January 28, 2008, 12:47 am www.webchannel24.com 150 Cloverfield, movies, horror, blockbuster Cloverfield Movie Review
Heath Ledger Death Not Suicide
Entertainment
Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger, 28, has died of a possible drug overdose involving sleeping pills in New York, police have confirmed.
Heath Ledger, who was nominated for an Academy Award in his work on Brokeback Mountain, was found dead today of a possible drug overdose involving sleeping pills.

Ledger, 28, was found by his maid Tuesday afternoon apparently surrounded by sleeping pills. The maid came in to notify Ledger that his massuse had arrived but found the actor dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The family of Ledger was particularly upset over the media's suggestion that Ledger's death was a possible suicide.

"The medical examiner, once he or she conducts an autopsy, will determine exactly the cause of death," said New York Lieutenant John Grimpal.

The actor was apparently suffering from sleeping problems after completing work on I'm Not There in which he played rocker legend Bob Dylan. He also claimed to be worn down from his filiming on The Dark Knight, a sequel to the current Batman franchise where he plays the psychotic supervillain The Joker.

"It is tragic that we have lost one of our nation's finest actors in the prime of his life,'' said Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Many of Ledger's fellow Australian actors, such as Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman, expressed their sadness over the loss.

He had a two-year-old daughter, Matilda, with former fiancee and Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams.

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/MMPH/249525~Heath-Ledger-Posters.jpg Tom Joyce Cobra Nation January 22, 2008, 8:29 pm www.webchannel24.com 147 Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight, Hollywood, overdose, death, drugs, celebrity Heath Ledger found dead in his Manhattan apartment early this morning.
Editorial: American Idols Starts Again
Entertainment
In it's seventh season, American Idol starts off with a host of characters and talent from the City of Brotherly Love.
One of the most highest rated television series in American history has returned for its seventh season as American Idol took to the airwaves on Tuesday January 15th.

The first show came from the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, and in true first week custom, the freaks came out in full mass. Of notable mention was the underlying "Star Wars" theme as one man dressed in Princess Leia's "slave girl" outfit - skin an all - to show off his hairy chest. Paula Abdul instructed him to shave and come back later, obviously not thinking he would, and of course he did. He didn't get far in his singing but he made a mark on the judges. Another Princess Leia fan became rather upset that American Idol didn't want someone "different" on their show, filling herself with self pity for being a "geek" but slamming the show for not wanting her. Perhaps she missed the part about American Idol being a Pop Show - hence, it will be filled with pretty girls and socially adorable men.

Most of all, a rather sassy young thing in glittering shirt and make-up sang rather poorly and went on a finger-flipping rant about Simon and American Idol in general. Of all the freaks, she might have a future careers as a ranting character on a series of TV commercials selling some product.

It wasn't all show, there were some rather talented individuals coming out of Philly, including a dredlocked pretty boy who will probably go far in the show, a mother with an ill daughter who's story would break anyone's heart, and a country girl who shined brighter than anyone on the screen.

So far, Idol is shaping up to be it's usual self. We'll see what the seventh season will bring.
http://www.americanidolringtones.info/images/americanidol.jpg Jason Starr Entertain Me! Editorial: Bill Maher Gets Tough!
Entertainment
Maher on Friday night helped security remove a rowdy protester from the studio during his weekly HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher," and it was all captured on live television.
I must say I am NO fan of Bill Maher, but when he kicked out a rowdy protester from his show Friday night, I couldn't help but cheer.

Maher is on the opposite side of reality from me ... as in I live in the real world and he lives in a marijuana induced haze of Hollywood working three months at a time, one day a week doing a one hour television show. Every once in a while, I'll catch him actually speaking some truth on his show or showing some common sense. Actually, he's been doing a lot more of that lately.

So, a rather obnoxious person (more obnoxious than Maher) started babbling and yelling about a 9/11 conspiracy in the audience. Maher asked if he had any f***ing security or if he would have to kick that guys butt himself. Security eventually ousted the loud mouth and Maher himself joined in to get the guy "Out! Out! Out!". I've been to a taping of Maher's show and the crowd was filled with rather dubious looking individuals when I was there - the most extreme of the left. But this guy ... and a number of fellow nutballs who agreed with him ... proved even too wacky left for Maher.

To those who are still on this conspiracy binge ... 9/11 WAS NOT A CONSPIRACY. HIJACKERS FLEW HUGE, FUEL FILLED PLANES INTO BUILDINGS WHICH CAUSED UNTOLD AND UNFORSEEN DAMAGE. Enough of the BS, really.

As for Maher, I still think he's nuts, but kudos to him for not allowing nonsense and anarchy to prevail on his show. However, how will he reconcile this with his philosophy for the country which actually encourages this kind of stuff? The guy who so often defends free speech in the sense of offensive speech censors someone who says something HE doesn't like? Maybe it'll be a wake up call for ol' Maher, but I doubt it.
http://impeachforpeace.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/Bill%20Maher.jpg Tom Joyce Cobra Nation October 20, 2007, 4:48 pm www.webchannel24.com 123 Bill Maher, protester, Real Time, Friday, 9/11 conspiracy, security guards, live television Bill Maher kicks a protester out of his Friday night show himself
Movie Review: Why Did I Get Married?
Entertainment
Surprising many in the Hollywood realm of film, Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married" screamed past George Clooney and young Hollywood crime dramas to post summer time opening weekend numbers. Could there be a lesson in this?
"Why Did I Get Married" is an adaptation of a play written by Tyler Perry some years ago (as many of his films often are). This time, four middle to upper-middle class African American married couples deal with intense, character testing issues that threaten to destroy all four marriages. Through a series of twists and turns, and Perry's unique ability to write dialogue the way real, everyday African Americans actually talk (ie. it's not all ebonics), the characters in the story come out the other end either having grown or having come to a realization about their relationships, themselves, and their futures.

The movie stars Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Malik Yoba, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Denise Boutte. A talented cast that was extremely WELL casted for their respective roles. In the past, Perry's films have not shown the best in casting choices, but here all the selections were spot on.

You will read many reviews of this (and many) of Perry's films that give the film a mediocre rating. They don't openly trash the film, but you'll often see words like buppy, simplistic, preachy etc. etc. and an overall snide tone towards the message and tone of Perry's films. I find this disgusting. Here, we have a film about everyday black professionals ... and I know this is an awkward thing for American film media to grasp, but as you can see by the box office numbers, MANY black people want to see black films that are about them (ie. not just poor ghetto black people) dealing with issues they deal with (ie. just like all other people in western civilization) and show the beliefs and morals Black Americans have in common (ie. many black americans go to church and/or pray).

I guess for them, if there isn't, say ... a black person playing a convict, gangster, pimp or drug dealer in the light of the anti-hero ... or an undereducated poor black man or woman from the ghetto who can only get out through football, music or stomping a yard ... or the black characters in the film are under constant oppression on or off screen by "the man" or America ... or even when it's a realistic drama, we have to have moments of outrageous ebonic-driven slapstick (read: get me an Iced Tea MF'er) ... well, I guess we can't have a black film without that.

Top of their craft doctors and lawyers and business owners dealing with interpersonal relationship issues ... no thugs, no drugs, no pimps, no rapping, no cool new slang for whitey to learn? ... what the hell kind of black film is this?!?!

Well, I'll tell you ... it's a well crafted story that tugs at the heart, makes you laugh, makes you smile, makes you feel, and is representative of the lives many African Americans lead. It's also what should be put out there in the mass media as the image of Black America over the pimps, the thugs, the gangsters and the drug dealing "heroes" we get daily. Thank you Tyler Perry for maybe smartening a few people in American and Hollywood up ... just a notch.

Why Did I Get Married

4 out of 5 Stars
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/07/roi/image/01_tyler_perry_b.jpg Jason Starr Cinema Minute October 17, 2007, 10:56 pm www.webchannel24.com 121 Why Did I Get Married, Movies, Tyler Perry, Black Cinema, African American, plays, movies, film, box office Tyler Perry - creator of "Why Did I Get Married"
Kid Nation Debut
Entertainment
Kid Nation debuts on CBS to mixed reception.
Although in its premiere episode there was little more than homesickness and a pulled muscle, CBS's original television reality show Kid Nation - where 40 children ages 8 to 15 are left to survive (on camera) in an abandoned town in the middle of the desert - still is drawing concern from many.

In this first episode, the kids have to pull supplies to their destination, establish some kind of order, and get the incentive of "gold stars" which translate into $20,000 when the show is over for each gold star.

Even though not much in the way of injury occured on this first episode, there have been reports that one mother complained her child was splattered with hot cooking grease and other children apparently drank bleach by accident. These reports were confirmed by CBS which claimed that first aid was given and no serious injuries actually took place during the forty day shoot.

Whether or not audiences will be drawn to this show and its ratings will match that of previous reality show innovations (Survivor, American Idol, etc.) is yet to be seen.
http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/08/24/kidnation.complaints.ap/art.kid.nation.ap.jpg Garth Brantley On TV September 20, 2007, 10:09 am www.webchannel24.com 107 Kid Nation, CBS, television, shows, children Kid Nation made it's debut Wednesday on CBS
MTV Video Music Awards Recap
Entertainment
Despite a bombed performance from Britney, Sarah Silverman insulting her children, and a fist fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, the 2007 MTV Music Video Awards did have some standout moments.
The show opened with Britney givng a less-than-great (read: bad) performance of a song who's own lyrics she didn't seem to know. She lethargically moved up and down the stage, spun around a few times, and hired dancers who were larger than her to perhaps take away from the fact that she wasn't exactly in shape, although she was wearing nothing more than sparkling lingerie.

Follow that display, Sarah Silverman (who for some reason MTV has an obsession with), takes several shots at her and her children, which I'm sure will get a lot of people upset. You don't insult someone's children, that's a rule of honor ... but then again, there's no honor amongst thieves.

The show finally picked up with amazing performances by Justin Timberlake, who won four awards on the evening, Kanye West - who won zero awards - Linkin Park, who's stage show was a dazzling display of light and sound, and the show stealer of the night: 18-year-old Chris Brown. Brown, doing a number of songs during his performance, had a dance routine that got praise from Timberlake later on, did an homage to Michael Jackson, and even brought in Rihanna to infuse her Video Of The Year song "Umbrella" into his set. Chris Brown is truly the next superstar in pop music.

Rock stars even made a return during the evening as Kid Rock and Tommy Lee - both ex's of Pamela Anderson who presented that night - apparently got into a fight off camera. This prompted Jamie Foxx to joke about it during his presentation with Jessica Alba, saying "we need to stop all the white on white violence". Reports are sketchy as to what exactly happened, but I for one am happy to see rock stars being ... rock stars again.

Alicia Keys had perhaps the most musically sound performance of the night (she actually did sing on a mic, played an instrument, and had skill at doing both). There was a brief moment of honoring Dr. Dre when he was introduced by Mary J. Blige ... only for him to introduce another artist. Not quite sure whether Dre was supposed to be getting an Achievement Award, but who knows.

Kanye West, 50 Cent, Timbaland (who produced the whole show), Foo Fighters, Best New Artists the Gym Class Heroes, and others had a series of mini-concerts within the Palms Hotel, where the show was held, on different levels of the casino. The show ended with the usual mash-up of top stars.

In the end, the show was more streamlined than in the past (no Host this year, mainly presenters and performers). It worked more as a big televised music event than an actual award show, which for MTV and the current music scene, is probably for the best. Is it a move forward in popular music - not really but at least we got to hear Justin say "Play more damn videos. We don't want to see the Simpsons on reality television," said Timberlake, referring to Jessica and Ashley Simpson. Ironically, he was presented his award by a group of girls who star in a faux reality MTV show.

---------------------------------------------

Winners

Single of the Year: "Umbrella" by Rihanna

Quadruple Threat of the Year Winner: Justin Timberlake

Best Collaboration Winner: Beyoncé f/ Shakira "Beautiful Liar"

Male Artist of the Year: Justin Timberlake

Female Artist of the Year: Fergie

Best Group: Fall Out Boy

Best New Artist (Kiss of Death Award): Gym Class Heroes

Video of the Year: Rihanna f/ Jay-Z "Umbrella"

Best Choreography: Justin Timberlake "My Love"Choreographer: Marty Kudelka

Best Direction: Justin TImberlake "What Goes Around....Comes Around"Director: Samuel Bayer

Best Editing: Gnarls Barkley "Smiley Faces"Editor: Ken Mowe
http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/nm/20070910/2007_09_09t222826_314x450_us_mtv.jpg Brian Green Entertainment Minute September 10, 2007, 9:41 am www.webchannel24.com 92 britney spears, mtv, vma, music video awards, kid rock, tommy lee, justin timberlake, chris brown, dr. dre, linkin park, rihanna

Luciano Pavarotti Passes Away
Entertainment
The "King of the High C's", Luciano Pavarotti, passed away at 5am Thursday September 5th, 2007 at his home in Modena.
On Wednesday September 5, 2007, opera's most famous vocalist - Luciano Pavarotti, who had been diagnosed last year with pancreatic cancer, died at his home in Modena. He is survived by his wife, Nicoletta and four daughters who were, along with his sister, at his bedside.

Pavarotti was a crossover sensation, being one of the few (if any) opera singers that penetrated the mainstream public's consciousness. James Levine, a music director at the Metropolitan Opera, said of Pavarotti, "Luciano's voice was so extraordinarily beautiful and his delivery so natural and direct that his singing spoke right to the hearts of listeners whether they knew anything about opera or not."

For his many fans, the world of opera has lost a true gem with no one in line to fill his shoes. "He was one of a kind," says Samantha Riley, a student at Goucher College. "We don't have many superstars in this [the opera] world, so it's a big loss."

He had been undergoing treatment for his cancer after being diagnosted in New York in July of 2006. Since then, he had been battling the disease with support from his family. Pancreatic cancer is among the most deadly forms of the disease.

His memory will endure long after his passing, especially in his homeland of Italy. Bruno Cagli, president of the Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome, stated that Pavoratti was "the last great Italian voice able to move the world."

The funeral will be held Saturday inside Modena's cathedral, Mayor Giorgio Pighi told SkyTG24.
http://www.amcostarica.com/pavarotti020204.jpg Tom Joyce Cobra Nation September 6, 2007, 2:23 pm www.webchannel24.com 87 Luciano Pavarotti, death, dies, opera, singer, september 5, italy
Review - Hostel 2
Entertainment
In recent years, we've seen a steady rise in the gore factor of horror films. In what we term here as the 'Lionsgate' era of horror films, we get another entry into this blood and guts realm from one of the major players ... Eli Roth's Hostel 2
To his credit, Eli Roth never claimed to be a great dramatic filmmaker. He wanted to be, and currently is, one of the horror guys. With Hostel 2, the sequel to the now cult classic original, Roth further cements his place in the current 'Splat Pack' of horror film makers (ie. Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, Alexandre Aja, Neil Marshall, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Darren Lynn Bousman, and Greg McLean).

Hostel 2 picks up where Hostel left off, with Paxton (Jay Hernandez) being found by two cops on the same train he was in at the end of the last film. After a tying up of loose ends with Paxton, we are thrust back to Europe with more American teens traveling the continent. This time, it's three girls who are confronted by obnoxious Italians, an overly interested nude model, and a creepy old man. They, of course, find their way to Slovakia where they unknowingly become captives of Elite Hunting.

The movie carries the same ideas of the first but adds a few new twists. We see the perspective of two would-be members of the Elite Hunting subculture - an overly compensating American businessman and his more hesitant friend. We also get to see a bit further into the workings of Elite Hunting and how expansive the enterprise is.

The only negatives I would bring about this movie are the very obvious "American's are jackasses" underpinning to the whole thing. It was present in the first film, and almost justified in this one. This is the purpose of the film on one level, but this kind of subtext is no longer unique as we've seen this portrayal of American college students and white affluent American males time and time again. The usual stereotype abound here but this can be overlooked for the actual originality of the horror in the film and the humorous moments. Roth expertly combines extreme horror with humor like no other director in his genre, a style he's had since Cabin Fever. There are a number of easter eggs in this film as well (hidden in-jokes) such as Roth's severed head appearing in one scene, the two antagonist girls from the first film showing up in a photograph, and a Pulp Fiction nod as in the first film.

Although box office receipts have been a bit disappointing for this film, given the original's cult standing and word-of-mouth hype, Hostel 2 will eventually become a much watched horror film in the video/dvd market. The release date of the film (smack in the middle of a summer season full of big budget action/comedy films and during summer instead of fall or spring when most horror films thrive), as well as the rather understated promotion of the film may have contributed to it's lack of box office success, but this all may be a good thing. Hostel may have run it's course which will allow Roth to go onto other projects and not get caught in the sequel-cycle. I am looking forward to what he comes up with next.
< 4 out of 5 stars > http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8f/Hostel2poster.jpg/200px-Hostel2poster.jpg Derrick Moore Moore Movies June 20, 2007, 12:09 pm www.webchannel24.com 76
Review : Pirates of the Carribean - At World's End
Entertainment
The third in the series of "Pirates" movies brings a large cast, plenty of characters, and plenty of plot twists all highlighted by another enchanting performance by Johnny Depp. Question is, is it a bit too much?
Coming in just shy of two and a half hours, Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End is another well produced and well performed popcorn adventure film following the antics of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) as they deal with a world that's trying to wipe out the Pirate scourge.

If that last bit of plot reminds you of something you've heard before, it should. The opening scene of Pirates is of several suspected pirates being led to the gallows, all while the military read the suspension of various rights, including Habeas Corpus. The leader of the Queen's Fleet is a short and resolute politician who is playing dirty. Can we say, War on Terror?

Fortunately, the movie doesn't go much further with those real world parallels as we get a great smattering of impressive visual effects, comedic spots and all around action that makes you cheer and smile at the same time. Depp is fantastic as always and the lesser known members of the supporting cast have several stand-out moments.

The only downside I can see from this film is that it falls into the same mistake every blockbuster has found itself in since the Lord of the Rings era ... it's too bloody long. LOTR needed to be a three hour film because of the depth of characters and the amount of story to be covered. Now it seems, to duplicate this, filmmakers or dumping a lot of story items to make the film "epic", but not really understanding that LONGER and MORE doesn't mean epic.

Despite that, it's a good conclusion to the pirate trilogy (or this part of it, as a sequel is possible considering the ending). So far, of the three (and a half if you count 28 Weeks Later) blockbusters that have hit the summer cinemas, this is the best.
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:Y1vx8S67Q1X8RM:http://www.freezedriedmovies.com/news/Uploads/pirates052006.jpg Derrick Moore Cinemaniacs May 29, 2007, 7:03 pm www.webchannel24.com 49
